In 2012 …

we hopefully have a lot of pleasure while flying. And
we hopefully have not a single accident!

For safe flights it is maybe helpfull, reading about accidents happenend in the past. Here is a link which is showing a lot of past aircraft-accidents.

www.airsafetyinstitute.org/accidentmap

(click on the picture to go there!) gives you an interactive map with the pinpoints of your selected accidents. You can move and scale the map as you like. Also select the accident types. They are sorted by

  • AC-types (more than hundred different types),
  • Years (starting in 2003) ,
  • reasons (takeoff, landings, fuel management,VFR-into IMC and stall/spin)

By clicking to a pin, you can find this special NTSB-report.
Also a lot of safety-advises are available on this AOPA webpage.
Maybe it helps a little avoiding accidents !

Have a joyfull AND safe 2012

Reklaw Canceled

We deeply regret to inform y’all that due to the complete lack of rain, and none in the forecast, we must cancel the 2011 Reklaw Flying M Ranch Fly-In and Campout scheduled for Oct. 21-23.

It is too much to expect that 1000 campers and 500 airplanes and 50 motorhomes would NOT start a grass and forest fire somewhere on the property, which would be a total disaster and cause possible injury and loss of life and property. The local volunteer fire department is already exhausted enough with putting out fires.

There is no way to expect that we can make up 20 inches of rain between now and Oct. 21, so for the first time in 27 years, we sadly must cancel the fly-in this year.

We will deeply miss all of you, and hope to see you next year…. If it rains.

PRAY FOR RAIN IN TEXAS.
And pass the word around for us…. We will be putting an X on the airstrip that weekend.
The website will be updated shortly with the announcement.

Marcia & David Mason

Live the Dream

The world of flight offers fun, freedom and experiences unlike anything else in the world. And all are invited to participate as Chapter 972 of the Experimental Aircraft Association hosts an International Learn To Fly Day event at Gladewater Municipal Airport in Gladewater, Texas, on Saturday, May 21. That International Learn to Fly Day was created to invite people interested in the worl of flight to discover more by meeting local aviators and discovering the initial steps toward “living the dream” of personal flight. Nearly 600,000 people from all walds of life in the U.S. are licensed pilots, but millions more have dreamed of joining that group.

During the EAA Chapter 972 International Learn To Fly Day event, which is free of charge, guests will discover more about how learning to fly is not as time-consuming or expensive as you might think. Pilots, flight instructors and aircraft owners will be available to discuss the possibilities and enjoyment available in aviation.

The May 21 event in Gladewater will be held at the airport terminal at Gladewater Municipal Airport, Hiway 271 South. It is scheduled to take place at 10:00 AM . EAA embodies the spirit of aviation through the world’s most engaged community of aviation enthusiasts. EAA’s 160,000 members and 1,000 local chapters enjoy the fun and camaraderie of sharing their passion for flying, building and restoring recreational aircraft.

Balloon Super Bowl

KLTV reports: …
- The biggest hot air ballooning event in the nation could soon be coming right here to east Texas. Longview officials are bidding to host the US-hot air balloon championships, hosting a weekend conference of selection delegates.

Familiar faces from the great Texas balloon race were on hand at a meeting with delegates from the balloon federation of America to pitch Longview as the next venue for the U-S hot air balloon championships.

Since 2009 the event has been held in Battle Creek Michigan. The decision for the future will be made in the next 2 weeks, 4 cities including Longview are frontrunner’s.

Good Luck Longview !

Our New President …

… is Arnold Phillips, in the background
(the foreground belongs to Abby):

Greetings Everyone !
Let me say right up front….I did not take any campaign contributions nor spend any of my personal funds to get (railroaded) elected as your new President for the next term.(Did he say two years??)

Garnet (and Melinda) have set the bar high along with help from Ken, Harold, Steve, Bill, Robert, and Bart. Sue and I realized quickly that we will have to wear many hats. Stop and think about it. We will have to fly, organize, cook, eat, make decisions, fly, clean, plan, build, fly, eat and be present and responsive at any function we have..

Usually, I do not make New Year Resolutions until after Super Bowl Sunday. This way, I do not break as many within the first week of the New Year…… A few things I have been thinking about: I think we should resolve to add new members and make sure we keep our present members involved. We have a great resource available to us. The talents of our members. I am sure we have a vast array of talent represented by our members. If you or your spouse have experience in certain areas, let us know. Whether it be flying, fabric work, welding, construction, painting, music, photography, cooking, speaking…whatever; let us hear from you.

I also would like to move along on the con-struction of a pavilion at 07F. I think we will all agree, a covered meeting place would benefit us and our guests. We may even need to look at a project. ( Maybe an electric plane..Ha) Of course we will continue the much debated Young Eagles Program. I think Sue is also going to start a “Telephone Committee” to call our member who do not have computers and i-phones, about upcoming events or needs.(Believe me, she knows how to talk on the phone). She will be calling on some of you for help.. Well, that covers some of the stuff I have on my mind (you cannot publish some of my thoughts..thank goodness) Just a little trivia: My first plane I bought was in 1983. It was a 1946 Luscombe. All metal with a rebuilt engine and new glass. I paid $3500. for it. Flew it around West Texas and loved it. After about a year, I sold it for $4500 and moved “up” to a Cub…

Thanx, Arnold, Sue and Abby

Reklaw 2009 25th Year!

The 25th annual “Reklaw” Flying M Ranch Fly-In will be Oct. 23-24-25, the 4th Saturday weekend of October. It is also the 17th annual South Central Cub Migration, the International Stinson Club Fly-In, and the fly-in campout. We will have a special little gift this year for everyone who registers. Due to ongoing price increases, the registration and food fees will be going up this year a couple bucks each. (We are very concerned about keeping this fly-in affordable, and strive to keep the fly-in finances at break-even self-sustaining.) Last year the food costs left us behind, and we’ll need to make it up this year. This is still a Ma-Pa Fly-In, By David and Marcia Mason. Our volunteers are very important to us, and we will be needing someone to help with the Saturday lunch this year, and all the other meals for serving and cleanup. We need to have someone helping with the parking and other issues, like keeping paper in the porta-johns, doing setups, and especially this year, policing for rogue campfires… (last year we found 4 hot fires still not doused out after everyone left on Sunday….) and of course, cleanup. The weekend before, the help and fix-it weekend, is Oct. 17-18. We will be providing lunch for everyone who comes to help out, rain or shine.
The web site is not up to speed yet, but stay tuned to www.reklawflyin.com for more information.
