Great Texas Balloon Race cancelled

The 2007 Great Texas Balloon Race, scheduled for July 13 – 15, has been cancelled due to a major weather issue.

“This decision was made in conjunction with the East Texas Regional Airport staff, County and City personnel,” said Tammy Skinner, 2007 Chair of the event.

Due to the heavy rainfall, this has become a safety issue as well as an issue for airport property. Lots of deliberation has gone into making this very difficult decision, including the possibility of moving the event to other locations within the City of Longview.

It takes the organizers of this event a week to week and a half to set up, without 5 – 7 full days of solid sunshine this cannot happen. The saturation has been the main factor with the forecasted weather not improving. We have received historic amounts of rain. In the 29 years of this event, we have never had to cancel the event due to weather conditions.

“This event would not be possible without the work from the volunteers, sponsors, City of Longview and Gregg County. With your continued support the 2008 Great Texas Balloon Race will be bigger and better,” said Skinner.
